India Win 2011 Cricket World Cup

02 Apr 2011

Finnstown House Hotel was the venue for the start of the celebrations tonight as India won a thrilling final match in the 2011 Cricket World Cup. MS Dhoni fittingly struck the winning runs, a massive six over long off to bring the trophy home for his outstanding Indian team. Sri Lanka had put up a very respectable 275 for six earlier in the day through the heroic efforts of the experienced Jayawardena. He scored a fluent century, taking Zaheer Khan apart in the late stages to push Sri Lanka well past the par score of 260 to reach what turned out to be a very competitive total.

In reply India had a shaky start losing their danger man Sehway from just the second delivery of their innings and when Sachin Tendulkar followed soon after India were reeling at 75 for 2. However such is the depth of batting in the India line-up the result was rarely in doubt and when Gambhir showed that he was in top form India chased down the runs eassily. Even the loss of Kholi failed to slow the run rate as MS Dhoni looked in the mood from the first ball and he and Gambhir took the game away from Sri Lanka despite Lasith Malinga's best efforts, breaking Dhoni's bat at one stage. It was a well deserved win for India and when MS Dhoni struck the winning six the Cellar Bar at Finnstown House erupted as Adamstown beagn their celebrations. Champagne flowed, Zambuca's were flamed and the party was started!. Well done India!
